December 17, 2006, The CP Yen Life Education Foundation (CPYF) convened in Taipei to discuss “Imagining Taiwan’s Future Together: Possibilities for Sustainable Development, Health and Diversity”; Open Space facilitation approaches were used to guide the discussion. We brought our hopes, trust and new ideas together to envision Taiwan’s future. By the end of our meeting we had organized ourselves into seven action groups, each committed to sharing this wonderful experience with our friends in central Taiwan. This commitment was finally realized in Taichung on March 17, 2007!

Taichung is home to the some of the best of Taiwan’s culture and people; it is the wellspring of innovative ideas and a source of social trends. Taichung also wields many brilliant talents and has thus become known as a place where breakthrough possibilities are generated. On March 17, 2007 nearly sixty people came together from a wide range of backgrounds such as nonprofit, entrepreneur, governmental affairs, literary arts, education and much more. We assembled at the Ming Dao High School’s Ming Yuan building, second floor meeting room. Among the participants were ten people who came as far as Taipei city to support this “Imagine Taiwan” activity.

The hall was spacious with long crystalline windows that created an open and comfortable environment. Calligraphy on two walls read: “Embrace The Present” and “Forever Hold The Moment “; everyone was shocked by the coincidental relevance these two statements had for our discussion that day. The timing and space available to us were perfect for spirit of Open Space facilitation. We sat in a circle, the most fitting geometric shape for communication. And with the assistance of a facilitator, we imagined together the future of Taiwan as well as explored deeply the potential paths for the future of both the group and the individuals involved.

Within twenty minutes one of the blank wall became absolutely covered with discussion topics, all of which were deep and broad, involving topics ranging from environmental protection, city planning, critical turning points for Taichung, local arts, education, civic society, balance between economics and the humanities, social welfare, individual responsibilities, core life values and so on - up to sixteen topics. In general, the scope covered our external environment, our internal mental health, our diversity and our sustainability.

The subsequent Open Space facilitation unfolded on the premise of a very important principle: “all who come are absolutely the right people to come.” Thus in this Open Space, everyone is our teacher and our friend. The Open Space methodology instructs each person in the meeting to choose a topic that s/he is passionate about and to form a small working group to discuss the topic. In this working group we listen, share, and care about each individual’s concerns and expectations, in this case for future of Taichung and Taiwan. By the afternoon, seven principle actionable topics surfaced as our group’s collective passion and responsibility. By the end of the meeting, several participants offered to conduct a similar “Imagine Taiwan” facilitation in the United States!

Following the first “Imagine Taiwan” facilitation on December 17, 2006, several foreign Open Space groups became interested in Taiwan’s initiative. It is not yet clear what exactly will be born from this second “Imagine Taiwan” facilitation in Taichung, but I do believe it will come from each person’s spontaneous strength to open the way to infinite possibilities. I hope the participants will maintain the same kind of sincerity, respect, and spontaneous spirit generated in this Taichung “Imaging Taiwan” facilitation and extend it to all realms of their life. As Ling Jian, the Founder of Ming Dao Foundation, said: “the environment can inspire us, ideals can move us, passions can influence us, but the future we can make.”

6. Unethical business ethics deter foreign visitors.
7. The government often constructs facilities without comprehensive development plans.
8. Provincial programs should be more than a mere formality.
9. Each village and town should strive to imitate how Yilan leveraged its natural resources.
10. Landscaping designs should have sustainable results.
11. Need to have an independent administration that does not bend to political influence.

Topic : Is the Fatsi Brook Polluted?
Convener :
Participants: Wu Junming (吴俊明), Xu Junyi (徐俊宜), Wu Wen Chang (吴文嫦), Zhan Guoxian (詹国贤).
Insights:
1. The Fatsi brook is home to seventy-two kinds of birds, more than a hundred types of fish, but there is also a high-speed railroad and the Chung Shan highway that passes through the brook; the waterway covers 180 hectares. This is already the third brook that the water department has destroyed by building a cement wall around it (along the northern section north of Chung Kung Rd.).
2. The Pinpu community: The areas of Chun She Li, Wen Shan, Chen Ping, Nan Tuan has a great deal of fish and shrimp which are also used to support the livelihood of the local Pinpu community.
3. If the river floods what will be the city’s response plan?
4. Nature oriented river engineering methods and ecological engineering: the river depends on hydrophytes for the decomposition of nitrates and phosphates.
5. The source of Fatsi brook, Shen Kang, carries pollution generated by mountain ranchers and deposits harmful elements in the Taichung basin. Fair trade law is not yet established and hence pollution created by mountain ranchers cannot be immediately eradicated. The only solution is civic education.
6. If people are not educated to change their harmful behavior then the trash will once again return to the river which we’ve cleared. Our community needs to exercise self-restraint when managing their trash.
7. The raft brook’s east bank must undergo planning for a synthesized development zone. 178 hectares shall make up an ecologic environmental protection zone.
8. Taichung city should protect its agricultural lands from being sold off to developers.
9. Securing political will is important; we should ask the municipal government to conduct more large-scale meetings with the public.

Topic : How to appreciate the beauty of Taiwan’s wooded
mountains
Convener : 连雅婷 and Andrea
Insights:
Wendy: Show your power as an individual and fight for protecting our resources.
Dragon: Insist against deforestation and for a forestation. I am saddened by the government policy of subsidizing 30,000 NTD for each hectare of deforested woods; this is why Taiwan’s mountains continue to suffer such destruction.
Wendy: How can we respond to this question? We must establish strong contacts of support.
Dragon: Taiwan’s chamaecyparis formosensis trees are almost entirely extinguished; we must examine the government’s policy. We can begin with emphasizing the market value of wooded mountain tourism to awaken the attention of the government and private businesses.
Wendy: Like the Penghu seacoast, it’s so beautiful!
Dragon: Also the grasslands at an elevation of 3,000 meters, the diverse mountain forests, and the plant and animal ecology are incredibly rich.
Wendy & Dragon:We need to close off and protect more mountain areas.
Wendy: Make appreciating and experiencing the beauty of Taiwan’s mountain forests a family commitment.
Elsa: With more family trips to the mountains.
Grace: The destruction of the forests is very severe, how can we maintain our ideas against that?
Wendy: I’ve traveled to Mt. Hehuan and have seen how seriously it suffers destruction.
Grace: Promoting environmental protection starts with education.
Wendy: To realize environmental protection education, just look at New York’s experience, by comparison Taiwan’s efforts are insufficient.
Paul: The beauty of the mountain forests can extend to artistic functions.
Nancy: Tahsi suffers from an excess of cultivated farmland, it’s very sad to see how man-made it looks.
Wendy: Trash is an important issue. Recycling should be taught in elementary school education that our clean mountain forests are beautiful and must be preserved. This can also be taught from voluntary worker parents
In conclusion, how to appreciate the beauty of Taiwan’s mountain forests:
• Initial question: transportation, potable water, too much reliance on vehicles.
• Problems: trash, over-cutting, overdevelopment, rock excavation.
• Art, photography and poetry can paint a picture used to educate about our civic responsibilities.
• Action: cultivate influential contacts, begin acting from different angles, and endeavor for change.
• Solve the problem: Education, research policies, unity in family activities, a child who likes nature will not become bad.
• How to Appreciate: know the plants, flowers and trees, the insects, promote knowledge of ecology, appreciate stones, don’t take the flowers, grasses or stones away from the mountains, keep our mountains pure and clean.

Topic : How to live together with one’s daughter-in-law
Convener :
Insights:
I have three children and communicate well with the oldest and the middle child, but have a difficult time with the youngest. The youngest daughter is very Westernized and rejects Eastern thinking.
You must change your own thinking as well. We have to give the children independence and not raise them in the old ways through pressure.
The government has also been making communities for the elderly…
With different buildings for one’s children.
Now you’ve got to listen to the child and trust them since the child won’t listen to you anyway.
Always so many conflicts…
It is now the young people’s time, they are often “right” and the elderly are rarely “right”…
Every person has their own unique talents…
They should be influenced by their mother; the home is a warm place that the child should forever want to return to.
Family”; Parents should not argue in front of the children.
Children should pursue a sense of achievement; the issue of video games is a social question of whether or not it limits the children.
A child should have an opinion; young people today are faced with international competition, this is unlike what societies confronted before.
Success is the common denominator.
Parents can be partial to children; parents aren’t perfect, so how can parents know the best road to take?
Do what you wholeheartedly embrace in your heart.
The children, the parents are all independent individuals; preach less and respect mutually.

Series : 1H
Topic : Who are we Taiwanese?
Convener :
Participants: Vincent Chen、
Insights:
Historically, Taiwan was once ruled by Holland, and then came the Fujianese moving in from outside Taiwan island. Taiwan is actually a multi-dimensional and multi-racial fused society. In childhood I immigrated overseas, only after more than ten years did I return to Taiwan but with a very different perspective and understanding of Taiwan.
让: We all come from different places, speak with different accents, thus speaking of origin will be a very sensitive topic. We must approach issues from a modern angle, not with a viewpoint based on the past. We must melt down racial conflicts, we can’t divide ourselves based on where we’re from, and everyone is living on this island of Taiwan together.
张: You can tell when someone’s from the south, you can easily tell where someone’s from; our past gave us all a wrapping. Historically, this has caused us to create tribal groups who are different and attacked one another and didn’t respect one another. Today though, we must treat all people with consistent equality, if only political conflict could now disappear!
Vincent: Past events, conflicts between political parties, have already passed; our society now needs a multi-dimensional voice that will end any previous intolerances.
洪:Who are we? I think we are a people without a tribe; at lonely times we may want to go to whatever side that seems to be “winning” – hence, the subsequent generation is unclear about historical events, they’re only told partial and selective history. Now, the generation after that, our grandchildren, really must clearly understand what is the objective historical truth - a history that is free of political manipulation and which would spare them of the confusion which we have had to deal with.
江: We must know, and confront history one step at a time; if we are unable to accept it, it will be very difficult to face anything at all.
If we can know past events in an in-depth way, then we won’t walk astray; to really profoundly understand, one must not misunderstand the past.

Series : 2A
Topic : Education of the future
Convener :
Insights:
Children study happily, across the world people gather, and our vision of the world opens.
We need multi-dimensional development.
Vincent: We no longer talk about competitive advantage; we must be as joyful as the Bhutanese people are. This can be achieved through economic development and raising educational standards across the country. We should encourage students to study subjects which will make them happy both for the present and for their future. I believe in natural education, learn whenever and whatever you want to. Unhappiness originates from one’s mind. Ultimately, everyone does what they want to do in the end. However much one studies depends on their own intention, initiative and drive. Those who appreciate such things will advance in life, it’s that simple.
What I learned in college has nothing to do with what I do in my work. When I’m with the workers, I learn engineering things.
Take for example the effect of education on monkeys in a laboratory: overtime through imitation and study the chimpanzees were eventually able to jump out of their cage.
Vincent: Parents should let go of some social conformities and restriction sin order to fully allow their children to develop.
A child learning something through studies doesn’t necessarily mean he/she will be successful in life. Life itself reveals the road to success. I know of a middle school teacher who arduously tutored the students but the students were still under achievers. For instance, my daughter is a student, she spends so much time preparing for her career, but how can I help her discover her own happiness?
* What are the family values? Seems impossible to avoid the issue of competition, parents should be attentive to where the children are having difficulties.
* I teach in a middle school; the responsibility of educating our children ought to be divided between the school, society and family. Everybody has a role, they just need to take responsibility for that.
Every life has its own path, but time must be given for it to be discovered (or else the wrong path may be pursued).
* We give our children too much pressure by laying such importance in comparing grades. Don’t force your children to be just like everyone else, judge them based upon their own objectives and goals.
1. Parents first need to change their own definition of what “security” means to them. Education also needs to change, “self-education” requires courage, we develop in the direction of that which we overcome. Children are independent, have choices and the right to choose, and we must respect their decisions. With this in mind how must we all change? 2. Spending money on a children is not equal to spending time with them. 3. Reflecting on life, establishing value is extremely important. (Respect natural law and order).
Vincent: Teaching and education has nothing to do with the educational achievements of the parents, but is all about one’s attitude.
Understand your child’s unique qualities and preferences. Facilitate their adoption of responsible behavior.
1. Study yourself and study your parents, only then will one know what best to do in a particular moment. 2. Allow your children to study and cooperate with others – through such collective intelligence they will acquire the capacity to resolve issues independently as well. 3. Children have a lot of test-taking pressure.
1. A happy environment creates a happy child. 2. Can education inhibit a child’s abilities?
Resolve a problem as soon as you perceive it.

Topic:What do you think is most representative of Taiwan arts?
Convener :
Insights:
. A culture of the land, it is not imported from abroad, a clash between East and West, Respect nature, our farmland, our mountains, forests and our aboriginal people.
. Eliminate the notion of us being Chinese, we also have Japanese characteristics, Taiwanese arts should be given time to evolve and manifest.
.External factors placed upon Taiwan, such as Westernization, has influenced our aboriginal culture and caused us to lose some of its original characteristics.
. The Gezai opera, fused with foreign elements is quite popular.
. Representing Taiwan, such as林怀民music,and 云门dance collection。
. But encouraging creativity involves exchanges across cultures; a mixture of both tradition and modernity is possible and necessary for further creativity.
. Art is with borders, Taiwan is changing as it continues to receive external influences.
. For example, If I only have two pieces of bread, I will sell one in order to buy a hyacinthus orientalis to console my nationality spirit.
. A foreign friend asks: “what should I do if I want to study Taiwan arts?” Dance, cuisine, cultural and academic exchanges, and more…
. How does one define Taiwan art?
. Experiencing Taiwan’s beauty, the taste of Chinese culture, a spiritual feeling, a respect for nature, the mountains, agricultural lands, a feeling of freshness.
. From north to south Taiwan has many varieties of mountain dances, aboriginal culture, Taiwanese foods, opera, literature, local songs and more.

Taichung’s balance between economics and the humanities
Insights:
. To learn about the development of Taichung city, see the science department’s report on the emission of carcinogens in Taichung.
. It’s impossible to develop a city without creating pollution.
Improving air quality and the quality of our water sources will place a population of 1.3 billion on a production platform which will create unknown benefits; the Taiwanese perspective is quite political.
I would like to do something because Taichung is the window to Taiwan. Full of opportunity, philosophy and spirit.
Mainland China is rapidly experiencing the information age.
Many families immediately began using DVDs, they don’t even have a video recorder; yet although the hardware is there, the accompanying services and software is not. I think Taichung is really great, it has a balance between economics and the humanities.
Creating cultural events within a community is quite difficult as it may attract negative associations and pessimistic attitudes due to previous experience of these activities being manipulated for political purposes.
Please give a round of applause to our convener! Having recently returned from, s/he saw the positive effects of posting on school buildings phrases such as “Peaceful benevolence and good faith”.
Thailand’s overseas Chinese school completely supports and encourages this type of education.
What influence has this had on Taichung’s Institute of Science and Technology? Economic development have brought about greater prosperity as well as conflict. City planning cannot be done for the municipality’s own sake, but through the better allocation of funds we can improve the environment, not only for Taichung, but the growth of community spirit will spread its roots in all directions.
How can we further develop our culture of the humanities? We can begin with environmental protection. Eating well doesn’t necessarily mean eating a lot; we also need to improve the quality of our media; and education: advocate that one should consume moderately, not excessively, this will improve the quality of our society.
Parents are the greatest teachers to our children, yet today’s modern society requires a double income family. The children are thus sent to after school programs or perhaps they spend their evenings at the library. Taichung county moreover has a large population of people who came from abroad. How thus can we build a sense of community? Today we merely interact by saying hello in passing, we do not have enough quality neighborhood interaction; how then can we build a common sense of values within our community which consists of different age groups and localities?
Civil respect is insuffience. Take the elderly for example, they have created an association amongst themselves to help elevate their own quality of life.
What’s the best mode of transportation for the elderly: public transportation? Taxis?
What about waiting a long time for the bus to arrive? And not everyone can afford to pay the taxi fare all the time. Free public transportation is also hard to come by.
It is extremely convenient for the overall public where there is public transportation providing convenient access to the city center.

Insights:
. In what way is changing Taichung important? We are now establishing a Taichung city development association. Many professionals have long dreamed of creating such an academic assembly. For a long time their dream never came to fruition due to lost momentum and halted progress and change at a certain date. Consequently, the urban district began to look bleak. Yet now volunteers are starting to change community habits and change the entire Taichung area.
Chen Zhenxun VS. Qiu Hongyi:
. Is it related to funds?
. Familiarizing the public with official personnel.
. Traditional industries have no way of surviving; one needs to be in a powerful position of demand in the marketplace before their voice gets heard.
. By way of dialogue shall it be realized.
. Business committee circles (of ten members each) will help promote business, but why are we having difficulty promoting it?
. The Taichung central area needs to be completely replanned.。
Chen Shujuan (陈淑娟):
. Taipei’s transportation network is extremely convenient, but in Taichung you meet obstacles wherever you go.
. Ultimately, what kind of life environment do we want to create in Taichung? Humans are able to move a capital, step by step, but we needs to speed up the pace of our footsteps in Taichung. Taiwan’s High Speed Railway Chairman Yin Qi, and Wu Ri district are very important people and localities for connecting Taiwan’s eight big industries. 
- Problems with taxation:
Intellectual property rights, real estate rights, from a corporate management consideration,

Amy
Insights:

Insights:
